Entertaining the Idea of Moving Again - Any Rental Houses?
(If you're not interested in reading the long story, just scroll the last paragraph for details about what I'm looking for. Thanks!)
It's a funny and sad situation but to be perfectly honest, it suits me just fine. Our second roommate really got weird on us over the past week. On Saturday, we noticed that we hadn't seem him around our place for the past few days. I didn't think it was that big of a deal, as he generally spends his time drinking in his room and going to school. But, I decided to knock on his door anyway in case he had passed out from some alcohol-induced coma and we needed to phone the police or whatever.
Knock! The room sounds empty. I try the door and it's locked. Interesting! I go through the bathroom and try to open that door. Viola! It's open, but the room has completely been emptied out save a matress, box springs, empty beer cans, and a jar of Bush's Chili with Beans.
Now, to be honest, he did mention that he was going to go visit his parents for the holidays, but he also told us that he wouldn't leave until Tuesday (today). He also said that he would probably only take his computer and his TV, not practically everything he owned. We were also under the impression that he wanted to go to the movies with us on Sunday because he wouldn't shut up about it all week long.
He's in the midst of financial difficulties but because we're softies, I told him that he could pay us his part of the rent and the utilities when he returned from his trip. Apparently, he has a little job lined up back home so that he could make some extra cash on the holidays. We really had no reason not to believe him, that is up until we stumbled upon his empty room.
Was he not coming back? Why didn't he say 'goodbye?' Why did he steal a check off of my desk, which he wrote last month but I hadn't cashed yet? Why was his door locked if nothing was in the room of value?
We (roommate and fiance and roommate #1's girlfriend and I) continue to discuss this odd set of circumstances and I start to thumb through the mail. A letter addressed to moi in horrible handwriting?
It's a letter from Roommate #2. He says he feels bad because he can't pay us for the 1 week of rent that he's actually home in December and that he thought if he told us we'd blow up at him. This makes as much sense as a diaper for a mushroom considering that we had already told him that we were fine with him settling-up when he returned and since we've always been easy-going when it comes to debts. He goes on to mention that he's staying with a friend until he leaves to visit his folks (is he leeching off of a friend and what's the difference between doing it to us and doing it to another random person?) and will return sometime in January to pay his debts and come back to live with us.
We are very confused, because he hasn't even given us a call. We have come to the conclusion that he's known about his plan for quite sometime and that going to the movies was probably a big cover-up in attempt to determine when the house would be empty so he could pick-up his mattress. This is because he continually asked what time we would be going to the movies but would also say that he had nothing to do on that day and he was just curious so that he could schedule studying for finals. Again, that doesn't make much sense. There's a few other things that are very suspect, like HOW AND WHEN THE HECK DID HE MOVE HIS STUFF OUT WITHOUT US SEEING? I kind of get the impression that he did it gradually since he asked to borrow my computer the night before he disappeared. He has his own computer for pete's sake!
So, I suppose we got burned, but only a little. I tend to think this is the perfect opportunity to move into a different place since we no longer have anyone stopping us from downsizing to a smaller apartment and our lease is up (although, we have to give a 60 day notice). I don't think my fiance and my roommate feels quite the same, but we all know that boys are stupid and must be commanded what to do.
And if you're out there, Roomie #2, you better call us, suckah!
SO, if you know of any rental houses in the Chattanooga area, let me know. At least 2 bedrooms, and 2 baths. Pets must be accepted.

"as much sense as a diaper for a mushroom" is the best phrase ever.
