Girl With a Pearl Earring

Girl With a Pearl Earring is a wonderful film. Despite the lack of a huge climax, and interesting dialogue, it is still an exceptional movie.

Griet, a maid to a married Artist (Vermeer), manages to become the subject of one of Vermeer's paintings. Unfortunately, the portrait has to be completed in secrecy, due to Vermeer's wife, who is extremely jealous and suspicious.

The part about the film that I enjoyed was that it is extremely sensual, even though there are no love scenes or sex scenes between Vermeer or Griet. Surprising, I guess. It is very subtle, as many critics have described it.

Another thing is, the film doesn't run away on tangents. For an example, Charlotte, a child of Vermeer who comes to resent Griet, tries to cause trouble for Griet by stealing something of Charlotte's mother, so that the mother would blame it on Griet. These instances do not overshadow or take over the entire story, and by the end of the film, it is realized that all of the little scenes like that are a very small part of this big picture. It is almost as if they are forgettable - again, very subtle.

I think the film does end a little abruptly, but even so, maybe that is part of the beauty of it. I really felt that this film didn't last long enough, even though it comes in at 95 minutes long.

I give this movie an A.
